NEW A.I.S.E. VOLUNTARY INITIATIVE ON LIQUID DETERGENT CAPSULES
The 2017 Product Stewardship Programme on liquid detergent capsules is a voluntary industry initiative launched in June 2017.
A.I.S.E. has launched a revamp of its "Liquid Detergent Capsules Product Stewardship Programme” including new voluntary commitments on superior child impeding closures, an advertising code of conduct and continued consumer education to drive safer use habits of detergent products and liquid laundry detergent capsules, in particular.
New voluntary commitments: PSP 2017
Several A.I.S.E. member companies active in the liquid laundry detergent capsules (LLDC) market intend to further improve the safety of this product category through new voluntary commitments. On 12 June 2017, the formal agreement opened for signature. This new industry initiative builds on A.I.S.E.'s first set of voluntary measures (PSP 2012
) which included opaque packaging, enhanced closures, safety instructions on the label and monitoring of cases with Poison Centres, and on the subsequent extension of this commitment to all liquid-containing detergent capsules and its adaptation following new CLP requirements (PSP 2015
1. Superior child impeding closures
Participating companies commit to implementing LLDC outer packaging with more stringent and quantitatively confirmed child impeding properties. This goes beyond what is currently required under Commission Regulation (EU) No 1297/2014. The commitment implies quantitative testing of the packaging according to the A.I.S.E. Test Protocol for Superior Child Impeding Closures
and, as necessary, the development and implementation of improved packaging.
2. Advertising code of conduct
Participating companies commit to having no advertising of hazardous LLDC in media (television and others) that is primarily targeted to children below 5 years of age. Furthermore, they commit to not doing promotions of hazardous LLDC targeted to children of this age group.
This commitment shall be implemented by the participating companies for every new advertising or promotion contract on hazardous LLDC that is established as of January 2018.
3. Consumer education
Recent research by A.I.S.E. and by the EU Commission shows that easy access to liquid laundry detergent capsules remains the most frequently reported circumstance associated with children’s accidental exposures. To address the need for ongoing consumer education, visible and targeted initiatives around safe storage and use will be put in place.

"Keep Caps From Kids" campaign
Companies that are active across Europe in the liquid laundry detergent capsules market, have committed to continuing and updating the online educational campaign www.keepcapsfromkids.eu
to drive safer use habits of the product at home.
Who can participate?
The programme is open to any company manufacturing and/or placing liquid detergent capsules on the European market (EU + Iceland, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein), regardless of whether or not they are members of A.I.S.E. or one of its national associations.

The programme is open for signature from 12 June 2017.
Within maximum 18 months from their individual date of commitment, companies shall have started production of packaging that fulfils the new criteria. Within the following 12 months, they shall no longer manufacture any hazardous LLDC products in packaging that does not comply.
The commitment to the advertising code of conduct shall be implemented as of January 2018.
